Locked down in 2020’s Adelaide quarantine Gwyn Ashton penned this chillout trance psychedelic track and got together to record it with Chris Finnen, both musicians on top of their game of musicianship and songwriting and both inductees in the South Australian Music Hall of Fame.
Ashton sang on the track and utilised a homemade eight-string biscuit tin guitar. Finnen played urdu, electric sitar and a bowed chumbush, three instruments from Africa, India and Turkey, respectively. In Isolation was recorded in 20 minutes with no rehearsal or discussion of what they were going to play, everything in one take.
It’s a positive message of hope in the current climate.
Rob Englander from eight10media came along for the day to video the occasion. Everything except the vocals were captured totally live, with Ashton mixing the track in his home studio and mastering engineer David Mitson bringing it to life like he did with previous recordings for Ashton and numerous Jimi Hendrix albums and even Sgt Pepper for Sony in LA, where he was chief mastering engineer for 30 years.
Tune in, grab some headphones and let this calm little track convince you to stay home and quarantine... In Isolation.
lyrics
In Isolation
The sun it rises then it sets, the days and nights melt into one
In isolation
The seasons change we might expect a revolution round the sun
In isolation
Ch:
Hide yourself right away, don’t come out till another day
Hide yourself where you lay, no you can’t, can’t come out to play
We need to share a state of mind, where we can work together
In isolation
It’s for the good of all mankind, in four seasons of weather
In isolation
Time stands still for all mankind, days and nights must be spent
In isolation
Tranquillity, a state of mind, is all that we have left
In Isolation
